This camp out was an AMAZING adventure and the attendance for both youth and adults was astonishing as there were 30 of us altogether. Sit back and get comfortable because this post is going to be a long one. I don’t even know where to start because we experienced so many awesome things throughout the extended weekend, but I should probably start with the Roadies as they accommodated our late-night arrival and then some. The Roadies (the Allen’s) were able to head to camp early to set up all the tent’s (two people set up 26 of them) so that when the rest of the troop arrived much later (this drive was a long one for us and we arrived at camp around 1 a.m.) we didn’t have to stay up any later than necessary. In addition, the Roadies were also thoughtful enough to leave each tent chocolates and a note welcoming us and their wish for us to enjoy our stay (five-star treatment all the way, thank you to our Roadies, we most definitely enjoyed our stay). Day 1: we went on a guided hike where we saw many types of plants, birds and one of the scouts even found a horseshoe crab (thank you Mrs. Watson for sharing your knowledge of nature with us); took a guided boat tour where we got to see a few different types of mangroves, birds, a baby crocodile, a manatee and much more; when we arrived back at camp some of us were daring enough to take cold showers, that may have been refreshing to some, but definitely not to all; lastly, for the adults anyway, we star gazed as well as talked and laughed (we have some characters in this bunch, that’s for sure. “Bless your heart”, Mr. Watson, we sure did enjoy your fetching pajamas and being the great conversationalist that you are, you kept us in stitches for quite a while, but seriously, you and your wife are amazing!); and if you can believe it, the youth were in bed by 9 p.m. (having no cell service may have had something to do with it though), which was way earlier than the adults for once (even Mr. Allen made it past 9 p.m.). Day 2: we went on a hike to the beach where the younger scouts decided to explore the very muddy shore (I think they wanted a head start on the wet walk we had planned to go on later, however, the older scouts chose to not get stuck in mud as they stayed in the grass and played football); went on an INCREDIBLE air boat ride (Pyscho Paul gave us the ride of our lives!), seriously, the smiles and laughter from all enjoying this one activity was an amazing thing to see when you consider the amount of people that we had with us (yes, all 30 of us went for a ride); went on a wet walk (it’s exactly as it sounds, wet…with water in your shoes, regardless of the fact that your shoes are “waterproof”) and we may have created our own path (shh…), but it was a great experience nonetheless, unfortunately, we did not see any wildlife unless you want to count the bunch of us slipping and sliding around (we may have been a little noisy) and the youth learned that we were not in fact walking around in what they considered to be “poop”, it was actually algae (thank you for the information, Mrs. Rominski) and we all made it out and back to dry land (although some of us were more wet than others by the time that we made it back to dry land) and when we arrived back to camp most of us braved the cold water showers again (nope, it still was not refreshing, in my opinion) some of the youth even broke down and took showers too after the day that we had!; lastly because we were all exhausted after our fun filled weekend, the youth and adults enjoyed lounging around the camp site (did you think that we would have energy to anything else, I hope not because even super heroes need their rest). After reading this post, did you think it was an oversight that I didn’t mention anything about food? Well, it was no oversight, I thought our meals deserved a separate section because some of us ate very well (to name a few things, there were eggs, a homemade coffee cake, brats, fall off the bone ribs, chicken cacciatore, delicious brownies and an unbelievable crème brulee made at camp). Can you guess who ate the best overall between the youth and adults? If you guessed adults, you are spot on. The youth are still learning to plan their meals better for time and the number of servings that they will need depending on how many people are camping (don’t worry no one ever goes hungry as there are always back-up options if needed). To conclude, this camp out was an epic experience for all of us and we are looking forward to our next adventure.
